Mr. Harvey Carl Nelson, 95, of Dresden, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at his home in Dresden. Services for Mr. Nelson were held in Bowlin Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18. Burial followed in the Sunset Cemetery in Dresden. Dr. Don McCulley and Bro. Wayne Perkins officiated the service, with special music provided by Marshall Anderson and Mrs. Linda Perkins. "Rolling Thunder" provided Military Honors for Mr. Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1922. His parents, Oscar and Ebba Nelson were immigrants from Eskilstuna, Sweden. Harvey served with honor in the U.S. Army during WWII both in the Philippines and in occupied Japan. He was in the famed "Tropic Lightning 25th Infantry Division. He met his future wife, Dorothy Lee Hamlin of Weakley County and the couple was married in 1941. The inseparable pair were married for 64 years until Dorothy passed away in October 2005. Many locals may know that Dorothy's parents were the late James Lafayette and Beulah Agnes Irvine Hamlin of Dresden. Harvey and Dorothy Nelson raised their family in the Detroit area and Harvey worked for the Michigan Inspection Bureau. After retiring, the couple returned south to Dorothy's hometown of Dresden, and enjoyed their hobby of collecting and restoring antiques.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his three children - Faith Orr of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Karl Nelson of Birmingham, Michigan, and Paul Nelson of Clawson, Michigan. Mr. Nelson had four grandchildren, Laura Moody of Lansing, Michigan, Britt Nelson of Los Angeles, California, Karl Nelson Jr. of Birmingham, Michigan, and Anthony Nelson of Clawson, Michigan. He had four great-grandchildren, Anna, Caleb, Lydia, and Cameron.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Dresden.
