Hycinth Juanita Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on September 12, 2025, in her home in Dresden, TN, surrounded by her family. A woman of great resilience, grace, and unwavering faith, she lived a life devoted to her loved ones.
Born in Dukedom, TN, on August 4, 1926, Hycinth was the middle child of Nettie "Net" Bell and Harbard "Harvey" Oscar Prince. She attended Welch School, where she played on the girls’ basketball team, and graduated from Dresden High School in 1944.
She met Harold "Bud" Eugene Smith of Latham, Tennessee, and they were married in Chicago on July 5, 1947. Their early years together were a testament to their enduring love and strength, as they raised their five children: Oscar "Gene" Eugene, Kenneth Wayne, Teresa Diane, Debbie Gwen, and Donny Elwyn.
Hycinth and Bud were baptized in 1958 and were devout members of their church at Shady Grove Baptist, eventually becoming active members of Siloam General Baptist Church in 1973, where Bud served as a deacon at both locations. Their home was a haven of hospitality, where Hycinth, a gifted cook, often hosted meals for more than twenty people, always ensuring there was food on the table and hot coffee to share.
After retiring from Martin Manufacturing Shirt Company in 1988, Hycinth enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Following Bud's passing in 1990, she continued to live a vibrant and independent life. She was known for her headstrong spirit, joyful nature, award winning baked goods, and expert record keeping. Many in town recognized her black Chevy S-10 pickup truck, which she drove faithfully until recently.
Hycinth was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; her parents; her two brothers; her son, Gene; her son-in-law, Mike Freeman; and her daughter-in-law, Melinda Nichols Smith. She leaves behind her four children, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Bowlin Funeral Home on September 16, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Hycinth will be laid to rest at Good Springs Cemetery.
