Mario Joseph Zito Passed away on January 4, 2020 at the age of 96. Mario was born in Detroit on April 8, 1923 to Maria (Vallelunga) and Leonardo Zito. He grew up and went to school in Detroit. When the United States entered World War II Joe enlisted in the Army Air Corps. During this time he served as a radio operator, mechanic, and gunner. For his service he received the American Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze stars and 1 silver star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, a Good Coduct medal, Air medal with 1 bronze cluster , and the World War II Victory medal.
Soon after the war he met and married the love of his life, Elizabeth, they were married over 50 years. Sadly Elizabeth passed away in April of 2006.
Joe spent many years as a master mechanic at General Motors. After retirement he and Elizabeth moved to Dresden Tennessee. During his almost 40 years in Dresden Joe enjoyed his community and the people he had an opportunity to meet.
Joe is predeceased by his loving wife Elizabeth, his big sister Lucy (the late Nick) Miller, brothers Philip (the late Marybell) Zito, Michael (the late Dora) Zito, Jack ( the late Mary) Zito. He is survived by brothers Domiano (Anne) Zito, Anthony (Rita) Zito, and sisters Mary ( the late LeRoy) Szarafinski, Margaret (Jim) O’Brien, Ann (the late Joe) Gurin and Marguerite (John) Rastall. There will be a graveside memorial service held on Wednesday. March 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with burial to follow. Friends may gather just prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m.
