Mary Ann Yates, 71, of Martin, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, October 18th, 2024, at her home after a lengthy battle with heart disease. Born on February 7th, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph Highland Yates and Neda Monica (Wilder) Yates, Mary Ann’s life was defined by hard work and loyalty to her family and friends. She is survived by her sisters, Susan Yates-Chambers of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Lori Albers (Myron) of Alto Pass, Illinois; along with her nieces and nephews: Amy Martindale, Heather Toler (Roddy), Timothy Yates Jr. (Kami), Lisa Yates, and Jonathan Albers. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Neda Yates, her son Daniel Yates, her brothers Larry Yates and Timothy Yates, her nephew Larry Yates Jr., and her pit bull, “Shyann.” Mary Ann graduated from Allen Park High School in 1971 and earned her LVN license from Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois. Her career as a line cook took her to the riverboats of the Mississippi, working for Ingram Barge Co. (1997-2009) and later Marquette Transportation (2010-2022). She took pride in her work and the community she found on the river. Raised in Allen Park, Michigan, Mary Ann moved with her family to Cobden, Illinois, and later settled in Martin, Tennessee. She remained a steadfast Detroit sports fan throughout her life and was an auxiliary member of the Anna, Illinois VFW Post 3455, supporting veterans’ services. Mary Ann was not one for frills, and her life reflected that. She was dedicated to her work, her family, and her causes, and she will be remembered by those who knew her. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Anna VFW Post 3455 or a veterans’ organization of choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
