Mike Pentecost, 73, of Dresden, TN died Sunday, June 14, 2015 at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Memorial services were held Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Dresden First United Methodist Church with burial following in Sunset Cemetery.
Mike began school in Dresden with Mrs. Maiden as his first grade teacher. He attended the First United Methodist Church in Dresden with his family and became a member in 1950. He attended Dresden schools until Christmas of his Junior year when the family moved to Northern Kentucky. He graduated from Dixie Heights High School in Fort Mitchell, KY. He went to Murray State and graduated in 1964.
Mike worked for the Sate of TN Department of Revenue and then the Education Department. He served as President of the Tennessee Association of School Business Officials while working for the Education Department. He then accepted a job with the University of Tennessee Institute of Public Service and continued there until his retirement in 1999. He worked as a Finance and Accounting consultant, Senior Management consultant and Regional Manager for the Municipal Technical Advisory Service with the cities in West Tennessee.
Mr. Pentecost served the City of Dresden on the Board of Aldermen from 1973-1985 and served as Mayor from 1985 until 1998. He received the Non-Rotarian Community Service Award from the Dresden Rotary Club in 1986 and was acknowledged by the Dresden Business Association for outstanding leadership in 1995. He served in many positions for the Tennessee Iris Festival and recently finished a 3 year term as Treasurer. Mike received a liver transplant in July, 2002 and has been referred to as their "poster child". Mr. Pentecost was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and served in many positions. His latest one was Chairman of the Building Committee for the new addition. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work and volunteering for the United Methodists in Mission for the Disaster Relief Team, the Mid-South Transplant Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.
Mike is survived by his wife Sarah Ann Holman Pentecost whom he married on December 22, 1962. He is also survived by his daughter and son in law, Lynn and Ed Frazier of Paris, three grandchildren, Cody Pierce, Kristel and Michael Frazier, mother, Opal Crawford Pentecost of Dresden, nephews, Joe B. (Elysia) Pentecost and Michael W. Pentecost, great nephew, Tanner Pentecost and great niece, Peyton Pentecost all of Union, KY and two adopted grandchildren, Emma and Reese Newbill of Dresden. He was preceded in death by his father, U. Blake Pentecost and brother, Joe Blake Pentecost.
