Sylvia May Elinor Simmons, 96, passed away peacefully Christmas night at Van Ayer nursing home. Her husband was holding her hand as Jesus took her home.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Corinth Baptist Church in Sharon, TN, from 10:30am until service time at 1:00pm with burial to follow in Corinth Cemetery in Sharon, TN.
She is survived by her husband of 77 years, Junior Simmons; son, Charles ”Eddie”(Peggy)Simmons; daughters, Gail(Sam) Darnell, Nancy Scott, and Diana(Dathan) Arant; 8 grandchildren: Eric Simmons; Katie Simmons Graves; Samantha Darnel Ray; Dustin and Daniel Arant; John, David, and Charles Scott; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alton Brown Elinor and Ovie Elizabeth Dunn of Christmasville; 2 grandsons, 3 brothers, and a son-in-law.
Surrounded by her extended family, Sylvia grew up on a farm in Christmasville. She finished high school at Dresden and then worked at The Dresden Enterprise until she married a hard-working young farmer from Como. There she found her true calling as a loving wife and mother. She tended the house and children and helped on the farm. Homemade bread and home-grown meat and vegetables filled the family table. Well into her eighties, she filled 3 freezers and a pantry with her produce and maintained a large house and yard. She sewed for the family, and when she had time, Sylvia enjoyed other needlework and reading.
She was baptized at Thompson Creek Baptist Church as a newly-wed and has been a member of Corinth Baptist Church since 1958. A true Proverbs 31 woman, she was always active in her church, her community, and her homemakers club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Corinth Cemetery or Gideon Bibles.
